Philippa: Thanks very much Mr Speaker.
A recent report by Rethink Mental Illness has highlighted that the DWP is not carrying out investigations of claimants who’ve suffered significant or serious harm, including mental health crisis, self-harm and even attempted suicide.
We are talking about the cost of living crisis. We know what that’s going to drive people to. So will the DWP instigate independent reviews of people who’ve suffered in the claimants process so that they can actually make it more humane and supportive.
The Secretary of State for Works and Pensions: Mr Speaker, the honourable lady raises an important point. I am confident in my department and my officials in that they undertake their duties carefully and considerately. I’m conscious that there are, will be times when things go wrong. I’m conscious that sometimes the department will be brought into local investigations usually by social services.
And it’s important that we do respond to that as well as the ongoing lessons that we learn from broader themes that we investigate through the serious cases panel.
